Institutional Review Board
Research Policies

It is the policy of Carroll College that any research conducted by its faculty or students involving human or animal subjects must come before the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review and approval.

Research already approved by an IRB of another institution may be recognized by the Carroll College IRB.

Involvement of individuals as subjects in a research study is not permitted until the Carroll College IRB has reviewed and approved the proposal.

While investigators may contact organizations from which subjects might be recruited, contacting subjects for recruitment or obtaining consent is also prohibited until IRB approval is received.

Generally, it is not the charge of the IRB to comment upon the scientific merit of proposals submitted for review except where the scientific merit of the research, or lack thereof, increases either the risks to the subject (directly or indirectly) or the research burden to be borne by the subject. In such cases, the investigator may be referred to his/her advisor (in the case of a student) or to institutional experts for further guidance.

It is expected that all research applications, animal or human, will be reviewed for scientific merit by the faculty supervisor (for students) or divisionally (for faculty) prior to submitting for IRB review.
