Scope of the Institutional Review Board
The scope of the IRB includes both human and animal research.
Research is defined as a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.
A human subject is defined as a living individual about whom an investigator conducting research obtains
1) data through intervention or interaction with the individual or
2) identifiable private information. Activities that fit the definition of research with human subjects include:
- research with humans or human tissue
- surveys of human subjects
- review of human subjects' records - even if subject is deceased
- pilot studies and feasibility studies (including single subject studies)
- research using data on human subjects gathered in earlier projects
An animal subject is any vertebrate animal. Activities that fit the definition of research with animal subjects include:
- laboratory research with live animals or animal tissue
- observations of animals in their own habitat
- review of previous data collected from an animal study

Submission Deadlines
The Carroll College Institutional Review Board meets during the academic school year to review research protocols. Protocols must be submitted by the listed submission deadline in order to be reviewed that month. If the 15th of the month falls on a weekend, the protocol is due on Monday. Late or incomplete submissions will be moved to the agenda of next meeting.

Application Checklist
Human subject application
- Complete and sign the application.
- Attach informed consent forms if applicable.
- Attach copies of recruitment advertisements, letters or notices if applicable.
- Attach copies of surveys, questionnaires or interview outlines if applicable.
- Attach approval letter for permission to conduct research at another location if applicable.
- Give the completed application to the faculty member who is supervising this research for his/her review and signature.
- Give the original and one copy of the application to
